Sclerotherapy is commonly used to treat spider veins. Spider veins are small, enlarged superficial blood vessels that appear red, blue or purple. They commonly appear on the legs, but can also occur on the face or elsewhere. These dilated blood vessels may be short, unconnected lines each about the size of a large hair. They can be connected in a matted or “sunburst” pattern. Some spider veins are small and aren’t very noticeable, while others cover a large area and can be quite unattractive. During the procedure of sclerotherapy a highly concentrated saline solution is injected with a very fine needle directly into the blood vessel. The solution irritates the lining of the vessel causing it to dissolve over the period of a few weeks.
